Background of the Study

The digital divide refers to the gap between individuals and organizations with access to digital technologies and those without. This divide is influenced by factors such as infrastructure availability, affordability of technology, and digital literacy levels (Chukwu & Adamu, 2023). For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the digital divide poses significant challenges in leveraging technology for operational efficiency, market expansion, and competitiveness.

In Gombe State, many SMEs operate in environments with limited digital resources, which affects their ability to adopt e-commerce, digital marketing, and other technology-driven solutions. This study explores the impact of the digital divide on business operations in SMEs and highlights potential strategies to bridge the gap.

Statement of the Problem

SMEs in Gombe State face significant barriers in accessing digital technologies, which restrict their growth and competitiveness. Limited internet access, high costs of technology adoption, and inadequate digital skills hinder their ability to innovate and participate in a rapidly evolving digital economy. Addressing the effects of the digital divide is critical to fostering sustainable development for SMEs in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of the digital divide on the operational efficiency of SMEs in Gombe State.
  2. To identify factors contributing to the digital divide among SMEs.
  3. To explore strategies for bridging the digital divide in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. How does the digital divide impact the operational efficiency of SMEs in Gombe State?
  2. What factors contribute to the digital divide among SMEs?
  3. What strategies can effectively bridge the digital divide in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The digital divide does not significantly impact the operational efficiency of SMEs in Gombe State.
  2. Factors contributing to the digital divide do not significantly affect SMEs’ access to technology.
  3. Strategies for bridging the digital divide do not significantly enhance SMEs’ operational efficiency.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on SMEs in Gombe State and examines the effects of the digital divide on their operations from 2023 to 2025. Limitations include variations in technology adoption across industries and access to reliable data on SME operations.

Definitions of Terms
